"The Joy Of Rain In Black And White" This is a photo of my son playing in the rain on Father's Day, 2011. |
The reason I started this blog is because I get a lot of the same questions from many people. Questions such as...
How do I photograph lightning?
What kind of camera should I buy?
How do I make my photos better?
I also have many people say, "Your camera takes such wonderful photos!" When you get to know me, you'll know that this statement, while meant as a nice compliment, always drives me CRAZY.
In future posts, I'll talk about why that statement drives me crazy, I'll address some of the questions above, and much, much more!
My blog is geared towards those of you who know very little about photography, but want to get better. I hope to also inspire more seasoned photographers who just need some fresh ideas and a new perspective on things. I really want this blog to be interactive. I throw ideas and projects out there, and you guys try them and share your results with us!
So I hope you guys will stick with me as I learn about this blogging thing, and learn about making videos, so I can do some tutorials. I'm pretty good as a photographer, but I still have a lot to learn about making videos....and blogging. Did I mention blogging?! :-) But anyway, until I get my act together, I'll probably share some videos and posts from photographers I really respect and know will teach you guys something. My main goal above everything else is to get you guys INFORMATION!
So...with that said, let's have fun and learn something!!!
I think I got it, lol. I have a Nikon 3100... I'm working on taking pics of the kids outside obviously I want a professional look, lol. What's the best time of day to take pics since I don't have all the lighting props??
ReplyDeleteThanks for the question, Kelly!
DeleteBy far, the best time to photograph people outside, especially without flashes and reflectors and so on, is on an overcast day.
Overcast skies give you a nicez , even lighting free from most of the extreme highlights and shadows you get on bright, sunny days. But if you DO shoot on a bright, sunny day, try to either shoot early in the morning as the sun is just coming up, or mid evening as the sun is going down.
Thanks again for the good question!
If I want to take pictures with the intent to enlarge them should I set my camera image size to small medium or large? And for the quality I have JPEG fine, normal, and basic and Ne raw and Ne raw + JPEG.... Amy suggestions??
ReplyDeleteUltimately, I would like to see you shoot in RAW. But that also calls for editing software, such as Photoshop that can read RAW files. These files give you much more information to work with when editing your photos. However, if you don't have that software or something comparable, you will need to shoot in jpeg. Probably jpeg fine.
DeleteGreat question!
Oh...and you want to set your image size to large.
DeleteThanks Joe. Is the software for Raw something I can get like on Amazon??
ReplyDeleteThere's a very good chance that an editing program came on a disk with your camera that would allow youbto take advantage of a lot of the basic RAW edits you would need to do. I would say, start there. As you get used to editing your RAW photos, you can add Photoshop or something similar to your arsenal. Thise higher-powered editing programs have quite the learning curve! But you can find all sorts of editing software on Amazon, or on the Adobe website!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea, Joe! For a first time digital camera buyer for taking pictures of family and nature in our backyard and in parks, what camera do you recommend? What store is best to get it from? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteMichelle...
DeleteThis is going to be one of my next topics!
Everyone wants to know which camera they should buy. In a nutshell, buying a camera is a lot like buying a car or a house. We have ideas of what we'd like to have, but then we have to go and see, feel, test drive and so on. I recommend going to the local camera shop where you have professionals who can help you weigh your options based on your budget, your skill level, and what you want your camera to do for you. Once you have a brand and model of camera you're ready to purchase, you can either buy it from the camera shop, or you can shop around. If you're comfortable shopping online, you can find some great deals on cameras and camera gear on sites like Amazon.com and B&Hphoto.com.
Am I able to attach a lense to my d3100 so I can take close up pics with a wide view??
ReplyDeleteKelly...there are as many, or more lenses than there are cameras! You can almost certainly find a lens that will accomplish what you want it to. There are wide angle lenses and fisheye lenses. But they can be pretty expensive. For wide angle shots and macro photography, there are filters that you can screw onto your existing lens that will give you much the same effect without have to spend all that money. I would suggest you look into that first, try it and see if you like it. If you do like it, and you see yourself using that effect a lot in your photography, then look at buying the lens or lenses. E Bay, Amazon, B & H Photo and Adorama are just a few of the online retailers where you will likely find these filters. Just make sure you know how wide your lens is. It's usually printed right on the front of the lens. The measurement is in millimeters(for example, 52mm or 58mm). Here's a link to a website where you can read more...
